TO THE NEXT LEVEL
The Bonifas is always looking for new artists to showcase their work in gallery exhibits. Each year we host a variety of exhibits for artists to participate in, including the annual favorites of Northern Exposure, Bonifas Membership Show, and Youth in Art. Work is displayed in our beautiful Powers and Studio galleries at the Bonifas, and duration of shows last 6 to 8 weeks on average. All mediums are in consideration for display. Work will need to be submitted for approval by the Bonifas staff, but you need-not be a professional artist to submit—just a love of creating!
January 6 – February 17
Reception: January 6, 7 - 9 pm
All Mixed UP is a new competition show for all of our mixed media artists. What is mixed media? Artwork that was created using more than one medium. Assemblages, collages, and sculpture are three common examples of art using different media. Come see how artists use materials in unique ways to create a work of art. Awards will be given out to the top three artworks, chosen by fellow artist, Mara Manning. This is the first exhibit of its kind here at the Bonifas and we are hoping to add it to our rotation of competition shows—joining Fabrications and the Photography exhibits.
March 3 – March 31
Open House: March 16, 4-7 pm for grades k-5
March 17, 4-7 pm for grades 6-12
The Bonifas Art Center sets aside its gallery spaces each year to honor the creative learning in Delta County area schools. As part of a nation-wide celebration, we remind our community of the importance of creative learning options and of our commitment to the creative spirit. Nearly 700 pieces of children’s artwork brighten up the gallery spaces and herald the coming of spring with a flourish of color. This year we will be handling the receptions differently. We will be holding open houses from 4-7pm on March 16 and March 17 to help spread the visitors out that come to view the exhibit. In addition, we will be recording the awards ceremony and posting it to Facebook on March 15th. You are sure to leave with a smile on your face after visiting this show!

This exhibit’s intent is to showcase the best of Northern Michigan University’s upper-class art students and in doing so, to present a backdrop to the type of study and growth available at Northern Michigan University’s School of Art and Design. This show gives real world exhibiting experience to the Junior and Senior classes of NMU School of Art and Design students and in turn gives us a glimpse into the future of art and the added bonus of knowing that is was created right here in the UP!

A 40+ year tradition, the Bonifas Membership Show, has encouraged members to share their creative explorations at every level of ability. Enjoy!

Highlighting the art world that can be found in the Door County area, we are featuring two artists from that area. We have invited a local favorite, Ginnie Cappaert, formally of Stephenson MI, and owner of Cappaert’s Contempary Gallery, to show off her new cold wax paintings. Her color palette is sure to please the eye. Joining her will be friend, artist, and owner of Ideas Gallery, Dan Cross. He will introduce his unique painting and photography to us. “My work always searches for the unseen resonating on a subconscious level, places that may seem vaguely familiar, yet mysteriously ambiguous.” –Dan Cross
