Bonifas Membership Show opening soon, submissions still welcome

The Bonifas Arts Center Membership Show will open May 18, and artists can submit their artwork April 25 through May 3.

“Since all submissions will be included in the exhibit, this allows artists who’ve never exhibited to show their work, introducing the community to new talents, which viewers always appreciate,” said Pasqua Warstler, Bonifas artistic director.

This year’s judge, Carol Irving, said she remembers the impact of a single conversation she had one of the first times she showed her work at the Membership exhibit, when she spoke with now deceased artist John Gustafson and his wife, Jan. “He had such nice things to say about the work and the design,” said Irving. “It made a real difference to get those encouraging words from an accomplished artist.”

Irving, a textile artist, will select the winners for prizes of $250, $150, and $50. Selected works also will be honored with “City Hall” awards for both Escanaba and Gladstone, displayed in municipal buildings.

Any artist who feels hesitant or intimidated still should “at least try it,” said Irving, because “sharing your work with others” is “part of the process,” and submitting and exhibiting “gets easier each time you enter.”

For many artists and residents, the Membership Show, a Bonifas tradition for more than 40 years, is a “favorite” because it offers the opportunity to view art by friends and family as well as artists viewers have come to love over the years, and it always features a diverse array of work, said Warstler. Works will be exhibited May 18-July 6 in the Powers Gallery.

All are invited to a free meet-the-artists reception May 18 at 7 p.m. At the exhibit and reception, “there is a feeling of friendship,” said Irving, with all welcomed.

Any viewer likely will find the exhibit worthwhile and interesting, said Irving, with such variety that “you just never know what to expect.”

Artists working in any medium who are current Bonifas members may submit. Any artist can become a member by paying the membership fee ($35 for an individual, $20 for a student, or $50 for a family).

The Membership Show entry fee is $15 for up to two works. An application with additional details can be found at the For Artists section on the website or the Bonifas.

The exhibit is made possible, in part, by the support of gallery partner AAA Klein Agency.
