Bonifas seeking photographs for ‘Inspiring U.P.’ exhibit

March 1, 2017  |  by Bonifas Arts Center

Any Upper Peninsula resident inspired by the U.P. can submit photos to the Bonifas Arts Center photography competition now through March 4 at noon.

The selected photographs will be showcased at the Bonifas’ “The Inspiring U.P.” exhibit April 6-May 4 with the photos of Michael Olson and Paul Rose, contest jurors, each with a lifetime of devotion to the art and craft of photography.

Any subject matter is welcome, as long as the photos were taken in the U.P. The competition and exhibit aim to celebrate the U.P., the varied art forms the region inspires, and offer viewers the chance to gain a deeper appreciation for and understanding of the U.P., said Pasqua Warstler, Bonifas artistic director.

Thus, while photos may be of U.P. residents, waterfalls, farms, cityscapes, historic sites, boats, wetlands, or forests, photographers are free to focus on whatever inspires them, which can then inspire viewers, Warstler said.

Professional and nonprofessional photographers (at least 18 years old) are encouraged to submit.

Prizes include cash awards and gift cards for photo processing. In addition, some artists’ photos, the winners of Purchase Prize awards, will be displayed in OSF St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group’s new Gladstone clinic; others will be featured on the Upper Peninsula Travel & Recreation Association website and in a traveling exhibit at the Center for the Arts at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island; and one artist will be awarded a solo show at Mission Point’s Center for the Arts.

Since photography is an art form more people try, hopefully, this competition will allow more residents to participate and experiment, with new artists getting involved at the BAC and more people exploring photography, thereby “growing the art form,” said Warstler.

The entry fee, for up to three photographs, is $20 for college students, $30 for nonmembers, and $25 for BAC members. Jurors will evaluate works’ creativity, originality, and craftsmanship.

Applications and additional contest details are available at the Bonifas or, or call 786-3833 for more information.

The contest and exhibit are made possible, in part, by the support of the Mackinac Arts Council, Bay College Arts & Culture, Northern Michigan University’s College of Art & Design, and Lake Superior State University’s Art Gallery.
