The Bonifas Arts Center seeks volunteer instructors/docents to assist with the day-long, off-site Fourth Grade Afield program.
Escanaba Upper Elementary School fourth-graders will rotate through three areas: science, introducing methods of gathering and documenting data; writing, completing writing about observations in a nature journal; and art, drawing pictures of observations in the journal.
In past years, Fourth Grade Afield has been beloved by students and valued by educators, and instructors/docents have found participation a joy, said Pasqua Warstler, Bonifas artistic director.
Fourth Grade Afield hopes to stimulate lifelong observational skills and written and artistic expression, said Corinne Haberstich, Bonifas education coordinator, and encourage appreciation for nature as students go beyond textbooks to experience and learn about the outdoors, such as “why we need these certain trees or shrubs” and other organisms and features of our natural world.
Volunteers, who will be trained, will assist students and answer questions. A background in science, writing, or art is preferred but not required. To get involved, contact Haberstich at 906-786-3833.
