Oil Portrait Painting

Create a beautiful portrait with professional artist and Northern Exposure XXVII winner Caroline Carlson. Caroline is a passionate and focused instructor who will use her years of artistic experience to teach you how to use oils to create unique and stunning portraits. In the morning you will walk through selecting the correct paints and colors, how to properly darken colors, and the importance of color temperature. After a lunch break, Caroline will work on adding color to your portrait and work on modeling the form.

Caroline will have gessoed panels on hand for $5 which are needed for the class. You may also pur-chase these on your own. Please bring your supplies to this class. If you need supplies, the Bonifas has kits prepared for a $7 fee. This class will be held in person. Masks and social distancing is required.


  • Paint Solvent: Gamsol (16.9 oz or smaller is fine)
  • 8 oz Glass Jar
  • Oil Paint Turbes (9 total): Burnt Sienna, Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre, Ultra Marine Blue, Viridian Green, Either of the following - only need one of these tubes: Permanent Alizarin Crimson Hue (Says "permanent" rather than just Alizarin Crimson) Quinacridone Rose
  • 2” wide trim Gesso brush
  • Art Brushes: Firm oil brushes (5 total): 1/2" FLAT / #10 BRIGHT / 1/4" FLAT / #2 FLAT / #0, #1, OR #2 ROUND
  • Wax paper palette or wooden palette
  • Palette knife (metal or plastic for scraping paint)
  • Color portrait reference photo
  • 8x10 Sketch pad
  • Charcoal pencil
