The Munising Bay Arts Association (MBAA) has been working diligently over the past few months toward the goal of establishing a retail gallery and arts center. Following hard work and perseverance, their dream is becoming a reality.
The “UP~Scale Art” center, slated for opening in May, will house a juried retail arts gallery and provide a place for holding art classes. Artists from around the Great Lakes Area may apply to sell their creations. The center will be in Munising Michigan's downtown district, at 109 W. Superior Street. The property is known locally as the Kelley Marketing Building.
Alger County has become a top destination for tourists in the past few years. The “Pure Michigan” campaign, Good Morning America’s showcasing Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and Kid Rock’s Born Free music video have made travelers aware of the natural beauty and outside activities to be found in our unique area.
According to the National Park Service, the area saw 750,000 tourists in 2015. They predict 2016 will bring more than 1 million people to the area. The new arts center will give local and regional artists an opportunity to market art to this high volume of visitors. The center is just 2½ blocks southwest of the city docks, a perfect location for foot traffic.
MBAA foresees the arts center being open all year. It will be run cooperatively between the MBAA managing board members and the artists. Artists have the option of either a working or non-working contract.
