U.P. artists to be showcased in Mackinac Island ArtPrize exhibit

Some of the Upper Peninsula artists showing work at this year’s ArtPrize in Grand Rapids will be featured in a “sneak peek” preview exhibit, “U.P. Art: Crossing the Straits,” Aug. 20-Sept. 9 at Mackinac Island’s Center for the Arts at Mission Point Resort.

Leaders at the Bonifas and the Center for the Arts are excited to be working together to strengthen U.P. arts, arts collaboration, and awareness of the region’s arts and cultural richness, said Pasqua Warstler, Bonifas Arts Center artistic director.

The exhibit, made possible in part by the Mackinac Arts Council, will encourage viewers to visit ArtPrize and to explore cultural tourism in the Upper Peninsula, said Warstler.

Since so many people visit the Center for the Arts, the exhibit is a great opportunity for artists, Warstler said. “Cultural tourism thrives on Mackinac Island,” she said. The Mackinac Island Center for the Arts will host an exhibit reception at 2 p.m. Aug. 20.
