Suzi Banks Baum, author, artist, and teacher, will lead “Powder Keg” writing and art workshops Aug. 10 and 11 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Bonifas Arts Center studio.
Baum aims to inspire participants with easy art techniques and liberating writing methods to use fresh language in personal narrative writing, drawing from experience and experimenting with voice, generating and sharing writing that can fuel memoir, creative non-fiction, fiction, or poetry.

Adding art to a writing practice improves writing, said Baum. “It’s very easy” for writers to stay in the analytical, she said, whereas when they start doodling, adding watercolors, doing collage, or making maps, this “unlocks a kind of force,” and they “begin to see other pathways” because creating art allows the mind to make more connections, accessing memories, often in vivid detail, that people thought they’d lost, and awakening the senses.

The workshops are supported in part by the Escanaba Public Library and Friends of the Library.
